The Renaissance ushered in a new cultural and intellectual movement. Known as humanism, this more human-centered focus had a profound effect on science, mathematics, medicine, and the arts.

Humanism revisited the arts of the Greeks and Romans and challenged medieval religious thought so prominent during the previous 1,000 years since the fall of the Roman Western Empire.
